Summer, sun, "Kaisertanz"

“Breathtaking scenery – right in front of the castle and yet in the heart of the city. United under a blue sky and on soft green grass. An impressive program and a small entrance fee so that anyone can partake. Techno, house, trance: everyone is celebrating the great diversity of our culture” Under this header, the first “KaiserTanz” took place in front of Koblenz´ castle on 17th June 2006, with EBS-lights being responsible for stage and sound. EBS lights GmbH was appointed to create a weatherproof area to cater for the line-up of international DJs and guarantee for an impressive sound on the main floor.

The main sound system, constructed as a four point sound system, was built of clusters of the brand new d&b Audiotechnik J-series line arrays, which were attached to Layher scaffold towers. The use of accompanying J-Sub bass-systems was especially resident orientated. Unwanted radiation behind the subwoofers could be avoided due to their cardioid radiation which resulted in a clearly reduced sound diffuseness in the low sound range and therefore an extremely precise low sound output. Although there was considerable sound pressure on the main floor, the emission results in the neighbouring city area could be easily kept.

This was also a new experience for the DJs. When under normal circumstances the records would vibrate in the turntables; the DJs repeatedly had to be assured that the floor sound was actually activated.

The complete system was remote controlled and supervised by a ROPE C Remote system. To ensure a constant sound level on the floor, the sound was permanently supervised by measuring microphones. Together with limiters which were combined in an audio matrix they formed an independent closed-loop control circuit and a constant sound level during the show. Another essential feature of the Rope software was the system check function, which made it possible to check the speaker function by comparing it to a previously defined condition at the push of a button.

Highlights were the two DJ places. The main goal was to decouple the playback devices from the dancing DJs on stage and the deep bass parts of the monitor sound as effectively as possible. Our audio team could fall back on the means of the companies´ sports department - the floor was built as a sandwich construction and was decoupled by tennis and squash balls.

The quick and simple cleaning of the system was tested directly after the show. Unfortunately, the dusty venue and the crowd had left their marks on the equipment.
