Stairway to Innovation

The lighting concept for the Bosch Rexroth AG trade fair stall at BAUMA 2007

At the established trade fair BAUMA, Bosch Rexroth were presenting their drive- and control technology for machines and plants. The surrounding area of the exhibits was supposed to be “clean” and technology-related. Surfaces of aluminium, glass and stone-slate helped creating the exclusive look within the pure image of the stall.

Four massive glass cubes were attached to the show-staircase – being hollow, they offered the perfect room for personal consultation. From the outside, they appeared to be just four massive coloured cubes.

Bosch Rexroth were capturing the audience at BAUMA 2007 with their fast-paced and perfectly staged show, which was incorporated into a fascinating lighting concept.

Objective targets
Bosch Rexroth is one of the leading manufacturers of drive- and control technology worldwide. Under the brand name of  “Rexroth”, more than 500,000 individually designed solutions for drive, control and motion for use in industry and mobile application are generated and come into operation every year.

Launched as “The Drive & Control Company” under the roof of the “Bosch” group of companies, they produced and distributed single components and whole systems into more than 80 countries and reached a turnover of 4.9 bn Euros in 2006. Main feature of the two-storey, approx. 526sqm big stall was the presentation of solutions to the four main challenges of the mobile hydraulics industry. As explained by Helmut Wagner, chairman of the hydraulics division at Bosch Rexroth AG, “the significance of the factors environment, energy, function and expenses gains steadily in importance.” Therefore solutions were shown, with which the manufacturers of mobile machines are able to address so far undeveloped areas of these four factors.

Responsible for putting the focus on this message has been long-term partner for building exhibition booths, bluepool GmbH from Leinfelden-Echterdingen, who generated a well arranged stall. Located at the back of the two-storey area were the consultation- and VIP rooms, kitchen and stockroom, as well as the generous catering area. The exhibitor chose a system which represented in mechanical and optical terms his high standards. The marketing department wanted to create a clean and high-class atmosphere. Using materials such as aluminium, frosted glass and a floor made from stone-slate/granulated rock fitted the requirements perfectly.

Light- and show concept
Main architectural feature in the front part of the stall was the by 11° rotated show staircase with a size of 10m x 15m. Here the four massive glass cubes were placed, which were illuminated from within and shone in the colours blue, white and red. Together with the glass steps of the show staircase, which were back lighted through colour-changing RGB-LEDs, they formed an attractive eye-catcher on the main stage. “The uniqueness of this project laid within the short period of time allowed for setting up the event” recounts Patrick Gönnenwein of “Licht und Schatten”, Meitingen, who was responsible for the light  concept, technical planning and who was ultimately in charge of the whole event technology. He proved also responsible for the complete tender procedure for all technical trades. “It took only five weeks from the first talk to the beginning of assembling”. The final design of the stall as well as many of the features was only decided upon shortly before building the stall. A high grade of flexibility was not only necessary for the illumination of the single exhibits, but also for the whole of the light concept for the show, since the agenda of the show was only done while constructing the booth.

Lighting concept
“We wanted to create a rather technical atmosphere, similar to the one in a laboratory” says Gönnenwein. “Walls, floors and ceilings were made of glass. These materials, as well as the desired flexibility, did not allow the use of fitted spotlights. Therefore we decided in favour of small, but attractive high-voltage 3 ph tracking-systems with very small 75watt bulbs and a narrow beam width of 25°.” The outer walls of the glass cubes were back lighted evenly by close-packed fluorescent lamps. During show-breaks, they were additionally illuminated by reflected light. Throughout the show, the moving lights “Mac 700 wash” and “Mac 700 spot” which were fitted into a rig in the ceiling provided spectacular mood lighting. This proved to be the best possible solution with regards to expenses and the bearing capacity of the ceiling. Still, Patrick Gönnenwein did not have a lot of time at his disposal to program the lighting concept. “After having booked the artists, consulted with the director, started the rehearsals, the desired mood lighting has been programmed and used in the final rehearsal within one day.”

For the illumination of the main platform and stairs, Gönnenwein used light with a colour temperature of 3000K and an illuminance of 800 to 1,000lx, which also accentuated single areas. Not only the main reception area but also the exhibits –which were positioned laterally to the aisle and at specially installed PC workstations at the bottom of the staircase- were illuminated with 6000K and more than 1,000lx. The desired high-class but cosy atmosphere for the downstairs catering area was achieved by using fixed halogen 50W down-lights. On the upper level seven suspended lamps were used above the tables and the counter, and in the backlit canvas ceiling halogen-lights which were dimmed down to 20% created a homely feeling.
